Topic: New laws affecting construction including Home Improvement. Plus, Strategies to pursue litigation or arbitration and when to settle

Please join us on July 18, 2018, as Scott Mangum, Esq. and William M. Kaufman, Esq. of SWEENEY, MASON, WILSON & BOSOMWORTH will be giving a presentation regarding new laws impacting California contractors, rights, remedies, and common occurrences when you are forced to pursue litigation or arbitration in a construction matter.

The presentation will focus on the importance of maintaining a proper Home Improvement Contract, including common pitfalls and omissions, and new laws, including AB 1701 (now Civil Code Section 8018).  Under Civil Code Section 8018, as of January 1, 2018, contractors who have direct contracts with owners have expanded liability under California law for their subcontractors’ nonpayment of wages, fringe benefits, or health and welfare or pension fund contributions on private works. Previously, the law applied only to public works. The presentation will also include valuable insight regarding settlement dynamics including informal settlement considerations, as well as creative litigation strategies and tactics when your company has to pursue or defend a lawsuit.

SWEENEY, MASON, WILSON & BOSOMWORTH has been practicing construction law in the Bay Area for almost 30 years, and its philosophy is that by educating clients and other businesses about their legal obligations, including changes in the law, we best serve our legal goal of minimizing or preventing expensive litigation, and increasing the likelihood of success when a case must be litigated, or pursued through trial or arbitration.
